What Equipment Do You Need To Locate Faults?

Here is our guide to highly recommended

TOOLS and EQUIPMENT

Using the correct tools for the job has always proven to be a better alternative than forcing the wrong tools to do a job that they weren't designed to do. This holds true in underground cable fault locating as much as anywhere else, because using the wrong equipment will do nothing but waste time and have you digging holes for no reason.

A good, reliable generator is the heart of your fault locating equipment. Most locating equipment requires a 120v power source, and the generator will also power drills, lights, and the occasional jackhammer. We recommend anything with a Honda engine for a quiet and powerful generator.

You will absolutely need a durable and accurate multimeter for circuit testing and fault locating as well. Fluke meters are expensive, but unsurpassed in durability and accuracy.

You don't need fancy, complicated, and expensive equipment in order to accurately trace underground cable circuits. The split-box Fisher M-Scope will get the job done, without all the bells and whistles.

The Timco Spitfire is considered by most experienced fault locators to be the "Crown Jewel" of locating equipment. Simple in both form and function, incredibly durable, and most importantly - accurate.

The Continuity Tester, or DC Voltmeter from Timco is the accomplished fault locator's best kept secret. With a multitude of uses, this durable device will answer all of those unanswerable questions!

That is the basic list of recommended equipment, and all that you must have in order to begin locating underground cable faults. Add some digging tools, a good drill, and maybe an electric jackhammer and you will be locating cable faults and repairing circuits in no time.
